Head of policy and communications

Salary: Circa £65,000 per annum

Contract: Full-time, Permanent

Location: Hybrid – 1 day/week in London office

We’re looking for a strategic and creative leader to take forward the UK Council for Psychotherapy’s (UKCP) voice in national policy, public discourse, and member engagement. As Head of policy and communications, you will lead our efforts to influence government, shape mental health agendas, and communicate the vital role of psychotherapy to the public and key stakeholders.

This is a senior leadership role, reporting directly to the Chief executive officer and sitting on the Senior Management Team. You’ll lead a small, skilled team and oversee the development of integrated strategies across policy, advocacy, media, digital, and internal communications. You’ll also act as a trusted spokesperson, develop evidence-based positions on complex issues, and ensure our messaging reflects the expertise and diversity of our members.

We're seeking someone who brings:

  • Proven experience in policy and/or communications at a senior level
  • A strong understanding of public affairs, government relations and strategic advocacy
  • Excellent media and digital communications skills
  • The ability to translate complex ideas into clear, engaging messages
  • A collaborative approach, with confidence managing internal teams and external relationships
  • Experience in membership, professional or regulatory bodies is an advantage

This is a unique opportunity to shape the public narrative around psychotherapy at a time when mental health has never been more important. You’ll help drive forward UKCP’s influence, visibility and impact in a fast-moving, high-profile environment.
