Transformative Impact in Record Time

Joining the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine (FPM) as Interim Head of Education in April 2023, William Booth faced pressing organisational challenges that demanded quick action. With a background in professional development from the Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland, where he managed multiple departments and a large team, William’s expertise was immediately put to use at FPM. He launched the DPM Training program, which now brings in nearly £190,000 in annual revenue. Alongside this, he refined and rolled out an induction program for new hires in pharmaceutical medicine, contributing an additional £220,000 to FPM’s income.

These initiatives not only boosted revenue but also positioned FPM as a proactive leader in addressing industry needs. The judges were especially impressed by the revenue growth these programs generated and praised William’s ability to identify opportunities that have long-term benefits for FPM.

Rapid Ascension to Deputy Chief Executive

William’s strategic vision and successful execution of projects led to a promotion to Deputy Chief Executive within just five months, expanding his influence over FPM’s membership activities and events. One of his most notable achievements in this role has been overhauling the Fellow application process at FPM. Conducting thorough market research and communications planning, his efforts have led to an increase in Fellowship applications, with more than 70 applications submitted in 2024 compared to just nine the previous year. This milestone represents his ability to innovate processes and increase engagement within the organisation.

Leadership in Strategic Partnerships and Training

Another facet of William’s impactful leadership is his work in strategic partnerships and training. He has been instrumental in transferring specialty training operations to the central NHS system, ensuring continuity and quality. His efforts have also led to a valuable partnership with the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), with a focus on developing and upskilling the medical regulatory workforce—a crucial move to strengthen the healthcare sector’s adaptability in an evolving regulatory landscape.

In addition, he spearheaded the expansion of eligibility criteria for one of FPM’s key exams, making it accessible to non-medical professionals, a step that broadens FPM’s reach and relevance. William also managed the development of an e-learning module suite for healthcare professionals, reinforcing FPM’s commitment to accessible, high-quality education in the field.

Empowering Teams and Strengthening Internal Structures

William’s leadership approach extends beyond projects to building robust internal structures and empowering his team. Recognising the importance of institutional knowledge, he carefully managed a critical handover process, retaining essential insights while ensuring seamless service continuity. Furthermore, he supported newer team members by helping them set clear objectives, creating a collaborative and empowering work environment. His ability to maintain continuity, even through significant personnel changes, reflects his dedication to sustainable growth.

Beyond operational oversight, he has played a key role in FPM’s senior management team, advising on strategic initiatives and providing essential support to the Chief Executive, even acting in her absence when necessary. His contributions to strengthening governance reflect a commitment to creating a resilient, forward-looking organisation.

A Future Leader in Every Sense

The Memcom Future Leader Award honours William not only for his immediate successes at FPM but also for his impressive potential to shape the future of the pharmaceutical and healthcare sector. In less than a year, he has demonstrated the leadership, strategic insight, and innovative thinking that exemplify a true future leader. His work in revenue generation, strategic partnerships, and membership expansion has not only driven tangible results but has set a new benchmark for impactful leadership at FPM.

William's journey at FPM, from joining as Interim Head of Education to becoming Deputy Chief Executive, is an inspiring example of what can be achieved with vision, dedication, and a drive for excellence. His success reminds us of the value of forward-thinking leadership in the professional association landscape, and it’s clear that both FPM and the wider industry stand to benefit greatly from his contributions in the years to come.
