Rebuilding Trust and Fostering Collaboration
Upon joining the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI) Board in 2019, Nicki Bone assumed the pivotal role of liaising with over 40 independent ITI Networks. This initiative was instrumental in rebuilding trust and enhancing collaboration between the Board and network volunteers, strengthening the organisation's internal cohesion.
Progression to Leadership
Nicki's commitment and vision led to her appointment as Vice Chair in 2020, followed by her elevation to Chair in May 2022. Notably, she leads an all-female leadership team—a rarity in the professional membership sector—comprising the CEO and two Vice Chairs.
Championing Professionalism and Business Acumen
A staunch advocate for professionalism, Nicki emphasises the importance of business acumen among translators and interpreters. Her diverse background, including experience in sales and raising a family before transitioning to freelance translation in 2013, serves as an inspiring testament that there isn't a singular path to success in the profession.
Strategic Vision and Resilience
Under Nicki's guidance, ITI navigated challenges such as the pandemic and the subsequent cost-of-living crisis, ensuring the organisation's financial stability. Her strategic foresight led to the development of a freelance rates research project in 2022, highlighting the benefits of professional organisation membership for translators. Additionally, she spearheaded the recruitment process for a new CEO, culminating in the appointment of Sara Robertson in 2023.
Outreach and Embracing Technological Advancements
Demonstrating a forward-thinking approach, Nicki initiated the 'ITI Ambassadors’ Working Group in 2023 to enhance ITI's outreach to businesses, aiming to elevate the profile of translation and interpreting professions. She also proactively addressed the rise of generative AI, encouraging members to view it as an opportunity for professional growth rather than a threat. This initiative included collaborations with academic institutions to assess AI's impact on the profession and promote up-skilling among members.
A Legacy of Leadership
Nicki's tenure as Chair has been marked by her unwavering dedication, strategic insight, and genuine passion for the profession. Her leadership has not only fortified ITI's foundation but has also inspired countless professionals within the translation and interpreting community. The Highly Commended recognition at the Memcom Excellence Awards is a testament to her exemplary service and the lasting impact of her contributions.
Congratulations Nicki!
