If you’ve decided to enter one of the 2019 memcom membership excellence awards well done, you’ve taken the first step towards rewarding your team with the attention and recognition that their outstanding work deserves! Are you interested in some award-winning tips?
We’ll start with the obvious. You have to be in it to win it! Sounds glaringly obvious but don’t fall into an annual trap of thinking you may go for an award this year and then pushing it to the bottom of your to do list for so long that the entry deadline comes and goes. Move the award entry towards the top of your priority pile and here are a few tips to help you on your way….
Research suitable awards
What type of award would consolidate your position in the market? Are you looking to profile your people, your products or your achievements? In an ideal world it would be all of these.
Choose your nominations carefully
Think carefully about what you’ve achieved in the past 12 months. Questions that you might like to consider include: where can you create a point of difference with your competitors? Which awards reflect your core offering or achievements that you are most proud of? Which work has been truly innovative and pushed new boundaries? Did it have a far reaching impact? Awards can be time consuming to enter so think strategically as to what you would like to achieve.
Follow the instructions
It might sound obvious, but do read the nomination instructions and criteria carefully and make sure you follow them, supplying evidence and hard data as required. If you are in any doubt about the criteria, do contact the award organisers for clarification. It can be worthwhile asking a colleague to make a note of each instruction given and each piece of information requested to confirm they tally with your understanding of the task ahead. Get super organised from the onset and, next to each point on this initial list, write the name of the colleague who can provide you with that information. After you’ve written your entry, ask your most punctilious colleague to proof read your entry for any errors / omissions.
Don’t underestimate how long it will take you to complete the application form for the award, so plan early and ask for help if needed. Once you’ve registered on our awards microsite you can come back as often as you like to edit and update your entry. It’s worth noting here that the deadline for all memcom award entries is January 31st!
Everyone Loves Stats
ROI is great! Depending on the award being entered, it’s highly likely that the judges may want to know what your objectives were beforehand, what you set out to achieve, how you planned to measure success, as well as the actual results themselves.
Use storytelling to demonstrate success and impact
Make sure that you include plenty of quantifiable data, but do also include some anecdotal evidence. Stories are a great way to demonstrate your point and convey your message and – most importantly – your impact. Also, try to inject some authentic personality into your entry which reflects the tone of your entry and the ethos of your organisation.
Create a joint entry with one of your business partners or suppliers
If you’ve done some work collaboratively, maybe a business partner or supplier could help write the award nomination with you. For instance, if you outsource services such as magazine printing, website research or CRM systems, the supplier may consider entering the awards on your behalf.
Need more persuasion?
If you are successful in being short-listed or winning an award, the benefits can be immense. As well as enjoying the celebration of the ceremony itself, winning an award can enhance your career, boost team morale and even help you to win new business or projects. Ensure that you have a communications strategy in place to capitalise on your winnings, which can enhance the benefits of winning an award for weeks, months or even years after the initial ceremony and photo opportunities have faded. Whatever the outcome – whether you reach the shortlist or not – the process of preparing an award entry is always a valuable exercise, allowing you and your team to take the time to evaluate your work and its impacts in detail.
