Profiling Our Young Marketing Executive of the Year…

Ben Massey, Marketing and Communications Manager at the British Pest Control Association, recently won Young Marketing Executive of the Year at the memcom membership excellence awards.

We spoke to Ben and his team about how it feels to win this award and the reasons behind his nomination.

How does it feel to win Young Marketing Executive of the Year?

“To win the award was a huge complement to the work myself and my team have been putting in over the last 12 months. At BPCA we strongly believe in driving professionalism and delivering membership value, and it is recognition like this MemCom Award that feeds our enthusiasm to continue that journey. I must thank my staff colleagues and member representatives who have supported me since joining the Association last year, and thank you to the judging panel for recognising my efforts, and to MemCom for facilitating such a well-represented sector wide awards initiative.”

Background to Ben

Ben Massey has made a huge impact since joining the British Pest Control Association as Marketing and Communications Manager in July, 2016. The 29-year-old was new to the industry, with previous experience in construction, sport and leisure and latterly the higher education sector. But he has already made an outstanding contribution to the progress of the organisation as a whole. Ben has taken full budgetary responsibility for the marketing function to deliver strategic and practical developments to many of the BPCA’s core commercial activities. He has also been the driving force behind a string of key projects which have produced impressive results.

Projects Ben has been working on

Website:

Ben went back to the drawing board to build an entirely new website for the BPCA with the project turning around in just five months. The old facility had become unfit for purpose and engagement levels were falling. Its replacement improves the online experience for a host of different audiences – providing the ability to navigate quickly to relevant information. The intuitive, user-friendly site delivers easily-accessible education for consumers and improved facilities for members. It has been developed to fit into Ben’s own strategy of ensuring seamless integration between all online and offline material.

Contract Sharing Network:

Ben has single-handedly devised an initiative that brings together a community of membership companies for fulfilling contractual activity. The Contract Sharing Network will enable members to find others operating to the same Code of Conduct through specific filters such as location, pest covered and certifications. It will help members to work more closely with each other in line with feedback from market research – helping them to sub-contract work if necessary – and will benefit end-users searching for BPCA companies too.

Market Research:

Ben led a large-scale marketing audit designed to measure the BPCA against its competitors. His in-depth work produced an intelligence report delivering vital information on membership, training provision, the delivery of technical advice and communications. Results of the research will inform strategic thinking and policy both this year and beyond.

Pest Management Awards/PestEx:

Ben has also devised and launched an initiative to recognise and celebrate excellence across the entire industry. The inaugural British Pest Management Awards was a highlight of the BPCA’s 75th anniversary dinner on March 22. Ben has also overseen the development of PestEx, the body’s trade exhibition, and designed the BPCA’s own stand from scratch based on the new website. Trade stands for the event sold out well in advance and record numbers have registered to attend.

Communications:

Ben has also had a radical impact on direct communications within the BPCA. He has led an overhaul of the in-house Professional Pest Controller magazine and the production of a training pathway leaflet – both successful initiatives which have led to positive results on the balance sheet. He has overseen a rapid rise in media coverage through the BPCA’s PR company, introduced staff newsletters and a staff intranet page on the website.
